  • Always-on internet required for use

Office 365 is the new subscription-based version of Microsoft's classic Office suite of tools.

Software as a service is the big thing on the market. The barrier to entry has been lowered for consumers, but at the cost of having to pay a subscription. As such, you'll no longer own an Office license if you upgrade to the newest version of the service. Instead, you'll pay a subscription fee to keep using the software. This is a huge break from the usual model, but one that has succeeded in getting more users into Office than ever before. Since there's no real barrier to entry anyone can afford to try Office.

Once you move past the idea of the subscription you can realize that you have access to a very stable set of tools. If you've ever used Office before you already know what you are getting into with this software. You'll get classics like Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, but you'll also have access to OneDrive and Skype. This allows you to put most of your productivity software under one umbrella, and moving from program to program is relatively easy. Once you start using all the tools you'll be hooked. Unfortunately though, that means you'll have to keep paying to use them in the future.

Office 365 isn't for everyone. If you want to own your own programs it might not be time to upgrade quite yet. If you want access to the latest tools and to always know that they'll be up to date though, Office 365 might be the right program for you. One thing's for sure though, Office 365 is redefining the way productivity software works.
